Minimizing corneal endothelial damage due to intraocular lens contact.

چکیده
Previous studies have shown that momentary contact between a methylmethacrylate intraocular lens and the corneal endothelial cells results in extensive cell damage. This contact damage is reduced by coating the pseudophake with various solutions prior to contact with the endothelium.

Endothelial damage from intraocular lens insertion.
Previous studies have shown that approximately 40 per cent of the corneal endothelial cells can be lost at the time of intraocular lens insertion. Momentary contact between the methacrylate surface and the endothelial cells causes an adhesion between these surfaces and results in extensive cell damage upon separation of the surfaces. This type of damage appears to be due to a biophysical intera...

tion and irrigation of the anterior chamber, and although lens design with surface protuberances may be of some importance, it is clear that a biophysical interaction between methacrylate and the corneal endothelial surface produces extensive cell damage. It appears that the methacrylate adheres instantaneously to the endothelial surface, and with separation of the two surfaces the anterior mem...
متن کاملRelating the surface properties of intraocular lens materials to endothelial cell adhesion damage.
Relationships between corneal endothelial cell adhesion and intraocular lens (IOL) surface properties were studied to develop a lens surface with a lower potential to damage the corneal endothelium. The surfaces examined were poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and four types of plasma-deposited coatings on PMMA. These four films were prepared from perfluoropropane, ethylene oxide, 2-hydroxyethyl ...
متن کاملTemporary Relief of Pain and Improved Vision in Patient with Bullous Keratopathy by Increasing Micro-Environment with a Specially Designed Soft Contact Lens Resulting in Decrease of Corneal Oedema and Pain Relief
Bullous Keratopathy is the presence of corneal epithelial bullae, resulting from corneal endothelial disease. Bullous Keratopathy is caused by oedema of the cornea, resulting from failure of the corneal endothelium to maintain the normally dehydrated state of the cornea. Most frequently, it is due to Fuchs corneal endothelial dystrophy or corneal endothelial trauma. Fuchs dystrophy is a genetic...

PURPOSE To present a case of Weill-Marchesani syndrome with corneal endothelial dysfunction due to anterior dislocation of a spherophakic lens and corneolenticular contact. METHODS A 17-year-old woman presented with high myopia and progressive visual disturbance. She was of short stature and had brachydactyly. Her initial Snellen best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 20/50 (-sph 20.50 -cyl ...
